Chances - an opportunity, moment, or opening that allows someone to do, explain, show, or prove something - good or bad. This is the 4th song in the Chiaroscuro Album, and marks the halfway point of the EP! If Drift Away and As One show the duality of connection, then Kindred and Chances show the two opposing results of trusting someone with said connection. This song took a while to write, and I had to search my bag for real world inspiration to get in the mindset for the song, despite writing the progression for it a few years back, nearly when I wrote the concept for Nevermore. (I repurposed it partially for Old Machine, but I always had the intention to finish this song.) This is also one of if not the heaviest song to date, with a progression that uses a minor 4. However, the actual minor aspect of the 4 was withheld until the end of the song. At the start, the 4 has a major context, where B is layered on top of it instead of A#. In the bridge, I used suspended chords for the 4, so the context was withheld. For background noise, I made sure everything in that section was tuned to A# and pushed a little back in the mix. At the outro, the bell pattern finally is able to play those a#'s integrated fully into the progression. I played a lot with pattern chopping and arrangement as well, utilizing 16th notes in pretty much the whole song, even as background elements. Overall, this song was a huge test of skill in the songwriting process as a whole. This song's progression is bm9 - Dmaj9 - gm6 - gmM7
